Please watch your speed in the neighborhood! Children can dart into traffic with no warning...

What you need to know before doing your taxes online

It now takes more than 71,000 pages to cover and explain federal tax laws. So it's not surprising the vast majority of taxpayers look for help preparing and filing their tax returns. Use of online tax preparation and e-filing continues to grow at record rates. In fact, more than 32 million taxpayers e-filed their tax returns from home last year, according to the Internal Revenue Service.

Delinquent Dues Payments

We still have three residents who have not paid their 2011 dues. This is having an adverse effect on our operating budget. If you have not paid, please do so immediately, otherwise the Board will seek legal advice regarding collection.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Damaged Mailboxes

Thanks to those residents that have replaced their damaged mailboxes. When driving through a neighborhood, the condition of the mailboxes is something that people first notice. This has an effect on their overall impression of that neighborhood.
You may have seen the difference in the look of Willow Lakes East following their mailbox replacement program.

Please check your mailbox for any needed repair or replacement.

Raised Sidewalks

Thanks to those residents that responded to our letter regarding raised sidewalks.
At the annual meeting is was decided that there will be a person or persons assigned to review all of the problem areas. They will work with individual homeowners and contractors to determine the best and most economical approach to repair.

Please take a look at your sidewalk to determine if there are any raised sections. There are a few in the neighborhood that could cause a serious accident to occur.

Commercial Signs Not Allowed

Please refer to the Brockton Manor Covenants, Article X, Section 3 for information about the restriction on placing signs in your yard advertising commercial businesses. This includes contractors doing work on your property.

School Spirit signs are allowed, after approval of the Sign Request Form available on the web site. Click on the 'Homeowners Association' button and scroll down to the link that contains 'Homeowners Request Form' and select the' Sign Request Form.'

Emerald Ash Borer

You have heard a lot about the destructive pest known as the Emerald Ash Borer. Emerald ash trees line our neighborhood streets.

It has been reported that damage from the borer has been seen not far from Brockton Manor.

As you know, the neighborhood trees have been treated the last few years and we hope that will keep the pest at bay.

Visit Stop The Beetle for information on how to identify this pest.

Please inspect your trees and, if you suspect they are infested, call Craig Fortner at 893-2412. He is the board representative in charge of landscaping issues.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lake Treatment

If you are treating the lakes yourself or have contracted to have it done, please email the board at brockonmanor@yahoo.com.
As you know, we contract for lake treatment and we want to be sure to coordinate the application of any chemicals. The Federal Clean Water Act stipulates how and when chemicals can be used. We will advise you later on the specifics.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Don't be shy about reminding speeders and stop sign runners that they are breaking the law and endangering our children.

Report from Crime Watch Coordinator Bob Chastain

It has been highly recommended by the Sheriff's Department to turn on front and rear porch lights and/or install motion sensor lights. Sensor lights are inexpensive and easy to switch. When lights pop on it makes thieves flee, as they do not know if it was a sensor or if someone just saw them and is already calling the sheriff.

We did have a call from the court backing Olive Branch. Some one moved, or was trying to steal, their gas grill. They heard the noise, turned on the porch light, and scared whomever it was. The grill had been moved, perhaps to gain access to a window.

We need to have everyone get to know their nearby neighbors, so as to know their routine and quickly determine if something is not normal. Exchanging phone numbers 'for emergency use only' is a good thing. Then, if you see something out of the norm you can call the resident and, if no answer, call another neighbor. If you sense something is wrong, call the Sheriff at 317-736-9155 . They have at least four cars in the area at all times.

White River Citizens United (WRCU) and Township Government

As you may know, the Brockton Manor Board, on behalf of the residents, has long supported White River Citizens United (WRCU.)

WRCU has taken the position that Township Government should be eliminated and has outlined the reasons for that position, and others, on its web site White River Citizens United

The Brockton Manor Board neither endorses or opposes this position and encourages you to research the options to help form your own opinion.

WRCU is an alliance of White River Township neighborhood associations and individuals.who are dedicated to engaging with State, County and City planning and governance bodies to:

•advocate for comprehensive land use planning to manage growth

•assist governmental units in preparation and enforcement of land use plans

•lobby for necessary infrastructure to be in place in advance of further commercial and residential growth in the township

•represent the interests of township residents in preserving and enhancing their quality of life

•protect and enhance property values, public safety, and the creation of recreational space.

Crime Watch Report-Mail Box Contents Thefts

Thieves look for mail boxes with the red flag up, indicating outgoing mail is in the box, steal the mail and copy the bank account numbers from any checks. Then, they total all the checks and create a phony computer-printed check using those bank numbers, which they then cash.

It would be wise to take your mail to a drop box or to the post office.

Crime Watch Report-Suspicious Activity

There have been several reports of suspious-looking activity in the neighborhood, especially in the pre-dawn hours. The reports usually are about seeing a van or car roaming the neighborhood, with no apparant reason.
Please be vigilant and if you see such activity, call the Johnson County Sheriff 317-736-9155 and also report it to Brockton Crime Watch . Describe the vehicle, the vehicle occupants, and get the license number, if possible. Of course, do nothing to jeopardize your safety.

Crime Watch Report-Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant.. Give out any of this information and your identity was just stolen..

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma, Illinois, and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud.

Check it out here: FBI Report and here: Snopes
